Lecture Overview:
This session offers discussion and recommendations based on the real, prolonged experience of one NICU dad. Jeff Stimpson's son Alexander was born at 27 weeks’ gestation in the summer of 1998, weighing 21 ounces. He spent a year in the hospital, six months of that in the NICU. Stimpson and his wife Jill came into the situation eager to learn as much as possible about their son's condition and not shy about asking questions regarding his treatment. Mr. Stimpson offers a compelling look at the roller coaster of emotions faced by parents with a severely ill child who must contend with sometimes supportive and sometimes callous medical staff and social workers as they advocate for the maximum care and opportunity for their child. He offers recommendations on phrasing, body language, and other nuances of communication, and will discuss how to deal with parents’ feelings in the NICU.
